28% of the Time Spent Online is on Social Network Sites [CHART]


Did you know that more than a quarter of the time we spend online is spent on social networks like Facebook? 

According to data from market research firm GlobalWebIndex, the number is actually 28%. That translates into approximately one hour and forty minutes of social networking each day. The firm surveyed internet users between the ages of 16 and 64.  The average person in the survey spent over six hours online a day. About 13% of that time was spent “micro-blogging,” the online activity that consumed the second-most time after social networking. Interestingly, the survey counted Twitter as a “micro-blog” rather than as a social network. This means that 28% of our time is spent on social media sites other than Twitter.

4 Ways to Make Your New Twitter Profile More Engaging


Last week Twitter rolled out its new profile design to all users. By now you’ve probably converted to the wild side and installed the new design. Your new profile features a full-width header image, a larger profile picture, pinnable tweets, enlarged engaging tweets and new tweet filters. These changes have given your profile a completely new look, sure: but how can you leverage the redesign to make your profile more appealing to engage other users?

Here are 3 tips for making the most of your new Twitter profile:

1. Header Image: Choose Neutral Colors

The new Twitter profile‘s header image owns a significant amount of real estate. Stretching across the entire width of the page, your header sets the mood for visitors to your profile.

The thing about Twitter’s new header image is that it lies on top of a lot of information, including your profile picture, six tabs and your tweets. This makes your profile look a bit busy. This is a vital step for those who share content. If you give your link an eye-catching title, more Web users will click through. The best titles create intrigue, interest and shareability. Take, for example, the website Upworthy.com. Its articles are notorious for having slightly vague titles, such as “The Next Step in Human Evolution is Creepy, Scary, and Kind of Awesome.” Imagine if this same article was titled something like, “Potential New Step in Human Evolution Discovered.” Sure, some readers, piqued by a personal interest in evolution, would still click through. But the original title appeals to a wider audience by capturing more of what this evolution will bring and will therefore draw more click-throughs from average Web browsers and science aficionados alike.

Your existing social media following may not net you the number of shares you’re after.
